In this talk, I will try to persuade you of the truth of the following line of argument: (i) robotic technologies have a great potential to improve the quality of our life; (ii) these technologies will be embedded in an ecosystem of heterogeneous devices, ranging from simple “robotic things” to full companion robots; (iii) to develop its potential, this ecosystem must be capable of proactive behavior; (iv) artificial intelligence provides tools to realize proactive behavior. I will illustrate this line of argument by discussing examples taken from recent and ongoing collaborative projects.
